When dyeing fabric, citric acid is used as a mild acid to help set the dye onto protein fibers like wool and silk, essentially acting as a "mordant" by creating an acidic environment that allows the dye molecules to bind more effectively to the fabric; it's often used as a substitute for vinegar in this process, offering a less pungent option while still achieving similar results.

Key points about using citric acid in dyeing:

Function:
Citric acid lowers the pH of the dye bath, creating an acidic environment necessary for acid dyes to properly attach to protein fibers.

Application:
Typically, a small amount of citric acid is added directly to the dye bath containing the fabric and dye.

Benefits:
  • Odorless: Unlike vinegar, citric acid has no strong odor
  • Good for sensitive skin: Some people may find citric acid to be less irritating than vinegar.
Important considerations:
  • Dosage: Follow manufacturer instructions for the appropriate amount of citric acid to add based on the quantity of fabric being dyed
  • Testing: Always test a small swatch of fabric before dyeing a large piece to ensure the desired color outcome.
  • Safety: Wear gloves when handling citric acid and avoid contact with eyes.

Add 1 tablespoon/15 g of Citric Acid to the dye bath per 1 lb/0.45 kg of fabric. Do not pour directly onto fabric. Add more, in small increments, if additional exhaustion of dye bath is needed. CAUTION: Avoid contact with eyes.
